The Hogan/Smoger Access to Justice Essay Contest is a $5,000 cash award given to the author of the winning essay. The 2023 topic should be announced shortly. Any student currently enrolled in an accredited American law school may submit a legal essay for the competition. Each submission must be an original, unpublished academic work between 6,000 and 25,000 words, excluding footnotes. The deadline is usually April 30 and the contest is administered by Public Citizen.
